A Timeless Night To Remember

Timeless R&B Hits with Chaka Khan and El DeBarge!

One of the reigning classics of R&B Chaka Khan ("I Feel for You," "Through The Fire," "I'm Every Woman," "Ain’t Nobody") returns to NJPAC’s Prudential Hall, Friday, June 23, 2017, this time with fellow R&B Hit Maker El DeBarge ("All This Love," "Rhythm of the Night").

From the moment Chaka Khan burst onto the music scene in the 1970s as the 18-year-old lead singer of the classic funk-rock band Rufus, Chaka Khan's powerful voice and sensual, show-stopping stage presence set her apart from her peers. Throughout her solo career, she has lent her distinctive vocal style to a multitude of music genres, including R&B, jazz, pop, rock, gospel, country, classical and dance music. A 10-time GRAMMY Award winner, Khan has racked up sales of over 75 million records worldwide, and has earned 10 No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts.

She was born Yvette Marie Stevens into an artistic, bohemian household in Chicago, Illinois. She is the eldest of five children born to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman, and has described her father as a beatnik and her mother as 'able to do anything.' She was raised in the Hyde Park area, 'an island in the middle of the madness' of Chicago's rough South Side housing projects. Her sister Yvonne later became a successful musician in her own right under the name Taka Boom. Her only brother, Mark, who formed the funk group Aurra, also became a successful musician. She has two other sisters, Zaheva Stevens and Tammy McCrary.

This R&B Double Bill also welcomes multiple GRAMMY Award Nominee El DeBarge. As lead singer of the family group DeBarge and later as a solo artist, El DeBarge helped to define the soulful R&B sound of the 1980s and beyond. Long known for his high tenor register and strong falsetto, his is the voice behind hits like "Time Will Reveal," "All This Love," "Love Always," and his signature tune, "Rhythm of the Night."

A native of Detroit, Michigan, El was the sixth of ten children born to Robert Louis DeBarge, Sr. (1932-2009) and Etterlene (née Abney) DeBarge. DeBarge sang in his local church choir and played piano as a child. Later, after his family moved to Grand Rapids, he and the rest of his family began performing at their uncle's Pentecostal church. When El was 13, his parents divorced after a difficult and stormy marriage. El is of African American, English, French, and Native American descent. Growing up, he was closest to his eldest brother Bobby and began imitating his brother's vocal styling.
